I got asked to make a custom shirt this weekend, and here it is. The client picked out the fabric, and asked me to slightly modify the design of another shirt I had made myself earlier this summer, and this is the result.

Glass Necklace

I had been wanting to make a necklace like this for awhile, so I finally made one two weekends ago, by candlelight... as the electricity was out! The beads came from a variety of sources:

* the 6 larger reddish orientalish beads are ones I found in a trunk at my Gramma's house several years ago. I have tried making a few other things with them in the past, but they never seemed to look quite right. I think they look perfect in this necklace.

* the crystal-type amber and light blue coloured beads are from a kit I got from the local dollar store a couple of weeks ago. The screw-end clasp is from this kit as well.

* the larger clear and green beads are ones I had leftover from camp crafts a few summers ago.

* the plain clear smaller beads are from a dollar store last fall.

* the clear blue, orange, red, green, etc. beads that make up the majority of the necklace (uniform in size) are from a pack of co-ordintating beads I got at Wal*Mart last spring.

Overall, I really love the way this necklace turned out. I made it long enough to wrap around my neck 4 times, and around my wrist 10 times. Although I'm not sure I'll ever wear it as a bracelet, might be a bit bulky.

Instead of working on Christmas cards, like I should be, I've instead been making other cards lately... it's been awhile since I've made any (I think a month ago was the last time I did, I've been sewing and knitting too much).

Actually, what I really need to be working on is Christmas presents. They're going to take me a while this year.

I got this striped paper in a pack of mixed patterned paper from one of the local dollar stores. I really like the colour combos.

The card above I made for my sister's birthday (next week, she'll be 24... she's getting so old! ;) ). She likes anything with birds. You might recognize this silhouette from elsewhere.

Personalized Piped Bag

When my friend Carolyn was a child, she never got those pre-made personalized items, they never came in the name "Carolyn". Sure, they had "Carol". Sure, they had "Caroline". But never "Carolyn". And "Carol" with a "yn" written in wasn't cool. (Meanwhile, they had "Michelle" in everything... I even had a "Michelle" toothbrush.

Anyways, it was Carolyn's birthday on Saturday. I tend to be a birthdays procrastinator. Like everyone gets their birthday cards and presents just a little bit late.

So this past weekend I worked on her birthday present, a bag I've been wanting to make for awhile. It needed an appropriate person to make it for though. Since it was to be personalized, well hello, Carolyn made the perfect recipient.

I waivered between a nice bright vibrant kelly green colour, and this chocolate brown. Finally I decided on chocolate brown because I wasn't sure whether or not Carolyn was a kelly green kind of girl.

I've never done piping on anything before, so that was a bit of a challenge. I like the way it looks. I like the way it turned out (in the end after a lot of stitch ripping). I don't know how many future projects I will do piping on.

I found this supercool varigated green yarn earlier this week and now I can't wait to finish the second mitten. I'm almost tempted to buy enough yarn to knit a whole sweater or cardigan out of this stuff, I like it that much. I think, however, that knitting a sweater would take me quite a while!

"Chinese" Make-Up Bag

I found this great "Chinese" embroidered cotton in April this year in a little cottage town at a dollar store that has a whole bunch of ribbons and trims and laces, a virtual goldmine of inspiration. It took me awhile to get around to making something, but earlier this month I picked up some pink satin at my local Wal*Mart in the fabric department, and this was the end result. The interior is lined with a great darker pink cotton.

I think this bag would make a great travel case for make-up, and could even be used as a purse for a fancier occasion.

The Amazing How-to-Make-a Quilt Soundtrack

Last summer at camp I helped my friend Amanda make a simple yarn-tied quilt with some Strawberry Shortcake and plain red flannel that she had bought. This year, another girl from camp wanted the instructions on how to make one… so finally I’ve written them down for her. I decided to have a little fun with it and make a CD-type booklet of instructions, and included a soundtrack of random songs to go along with it. :)

I think the "Required Items" page is my favourite... except for the fact I had to add #10 on later because I forgot it.

Yarn Holder

I bought the frame of this sometime early this year at the Salvation Army for $2. I thought that was a bit steep as it had a horribly terrible fabric on it. I had a hard time touching it to cut it off as I could feel the germs crawling onto me.

Anyways, finally this weekend I got to it and stitched this... a perfect yarn holder. I got the fabric at the local closing fabric store for 75% off of $14.95/metre. Later I thought I should have bought more as I think it would have made a cool duvet cover.

I like it, I think it turned out pretty well. And don't you like how it matches the carpet? ;)

I was looking for crafts blogs online today using a search engine, and ended up at a page on findit.com where this blog is listed as #2. It describes my blog as having "mostly paper and beautiful cards for all occasions." You know, occassions like when someone gives you candy or you need to thank someone who happens to like sheep or it's Mother's Day sneaks up on you again.

Sometimes I wonder if anyone reads this site, so it was neat to see it up there. :)

Summer Days, Winter Nights

The fabric store closest to where I live (other than Wal-Mart), the one that’s two towns away and a 35 minute drive, is closing at the end of this month. I went a week and a half ago and got a few pieces of various cotton prints for $3 a meter, and a few zippers and a pattern to use with a pink sheet I bought awhile ago and thought would make a sweet retro dress out of, and a whole lotta trim ribbon, because I love trim ribbon and tend to get a little carried away. I ended up getting over a hundred meters because it was so extremely ridiculously cheap, and cool. What's not to love about rabbits and mushrooms and fishies?

Then I decided I should probably go back yesterday after work and get a few more things because the fabrics are all at least 66% off regular price. But in the week and a half since I was last there, everything has been pretty picked over and all the really supercool stuff is gone. I did however manage to find some nice tan and baby blue twills (I think I’ll make purses out of them), some zippers, a few spools of thread (they had been really picked over as well), a sewing measuring tape (I’ve wanted one of these for awhile but never could find them, and this one also just happens to be a very cool olive green), three more ribbon trims I had missed the last time I was there (I couldn’t resist), and a bunch of assorted doodads for pursemaking. I only had 30minutes there before it closed, so I had to be quick and didn’t have any time to look at patterns. I am tempted to go back tonight to do that, and also there were two pieces of fabric I debated buying and they won’t be there for long if I don’t get them now.

When I was a kid my Mom would always buy fabric (and oh my goodness it is really thundering and pouring outside all of a sudden) and never use it. She bought it with good intentions but more often than not didn’t get what she planned on making done. She warned me about this on the weekend when I was talking to her.

But I remember a long cold winter. I’ve been trying to cherish this summer, the light, the jacket-less weather days, the opportunity to drive anywhere without scraping the ice off the windshield and warming the car up before driving, the ability to just go out and walk or bike… because all too soon it will once again be days when I drive home at 5pm in the pitch black darkness of night and the television attempts to suck me into an evening of nothing accomplished and nothing done because it’s too freakishly cold to go outside. My fabric stockpiles have intentions to make this winter a good one.

One of my very good friends from high school got married this past Saturday. For this card, I used a light blue vellum for the petticoat and top dress lining. A pretty clear ribbon holds the cardstock and liner (speckled paper) together. Inside I quoted 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it's not winter, but I thought I should get this up before winter is so far away in our memories that we're excited for it to come again. I made this card with some scraps left over from using a "Sizzlix" machine at a scrapbooking night I went to a long long time ago. I wrote "Let it Snow" with some nice "crappy typewriter" font rubber stamps that a former roommate owns. I think I will pick up some for myself though, I rather like them.

This is a close-up of a card I made my Mom for Mother's Day this year. The flowers are vellum, and stitched to the white squares. I tied the card and it's lining together with this see-through white ribbon that I particularly like. :)

Butterfly Flower

The red, light green, and butterfly wings in this card are all vellum. The butterfly body was made with wire, one seed bead, and two longer-type beads. The beads were threaded through one piece of wire, and then the wire wraps around the back of the butterfly. I stitched it onto the wings with thread and a sewing needle, and then through the blue flower. The flower and leaves and squares are stuck together with scrapbooking tape.

I sent this to my Gramma. :)

I made this card with one of the acrylix stamps my Mom sent for my birthday. The ribbon was actually from the wrapping of the package. Inside the card is lined with the same spotted paper as the bamboo is printed on. I love that paper. It's from the "mosaic" line that you can buy at Staples, I'm not sure who buys it. This particular kind is called "confetti" I believe.

Screen Printing

In junior high and high school, at the school I went to from grades 5-12, we were able to do screen printing in Industrial Arts class. I thought it was so fun, and I am sure that somewhere I still have a piece of fabric emblazoned with a screen print of Joey Lawrence's head that I did in grade 10. And I always wanted to get back into screen printing, because really what could be cooler than printing your own t-shirts, but the process I learned it on was a little more complex than my little craft table would ever allow for.

So I was thrilled to see Beth post about a simpler method, and see a link to a tutorial on how to do it. But, the only embroidery hoops I could find in this whole town were cruddy cheap wooden ones at Wal-Mart. So I waited a bit and got a better one at Michael's in Barrie last weekend when I was there.

This little turtle was my first attempt (it's simply on cardstock). I rather like it with it's blotchy little dots, even though they weren't intentionally put there. The technique has neat limitations.

My second attempt was on fabric, an oriental inspired blossom. I like it too... I'm not sure what I'll do with it yet though. Might make a fun pocket.

I think that it would be fun to print some fabric to make a few purses or bags with... I'm going to do some experimenting hopefully this weekend.

This is a thank you card I made this past weekend. The sheep swirls are made with a Fiskars embosser thingy, I forget what it's called. The text is printed out on a laser jet, it's size 10 Times New Roman, for all the font geeks out there. :)

7 Years

This my first attempt at writing something in knitting, and I think it turned out pretty well. I find that knitting on such small needles (3mm) takes what seems like forever to complete!

I am hoping that it fits the baby now that he is a month old! The yarn is an acrylic/mohair/angora mix I picked up at a thrift store. I still have lots left!

Acid Wash Happiness

I made this card at someone else's house, and I thought it so tacky I "forgot" it there. I thought the slightly "acid wash looking" background was hilarious though. I made it simply by pressing the paper onto a multi-coloured stamp pad. This morning this card showed up in the office as a going-away card for a co-worker. People loved it! I still think it's tacky.

I made this card a little while ago, but only just used it this week. The first letter I made with red cardstock, drawing the "K" on with a pen, and then used a clear sticker overtop that came with a whole punched out. It was then sewn onto the white cardstock. The other letters came as letter stickers, and were simply stuck onto the white cardstock. The different layers were adhered using double-sided tape.

Lace Galaxy

I made this card with a piece of lace sewn onto the mulberry paper, then secured to the blue galaxy cardstock with double-sided scrapbooking adhesive tape. I'm not sure I'm entirely satisfied with the design. I think I'll play around some more with the lace idea, but currently my craft table is overrun with a sewing machine instead of paper as is normally the case, so cardmaking is on hold for a bit until I sew a shirt I have on the go.

The lace, btw, I got for 50 cents a meter.

Tiny Toque

I wanted to knit a baby cardigan for an upcoming baby shower, so I went to the library and got a brand new library card and signed out a few knitting books that looked somewhat promising.

I also went to the local thrift store and got a steal of a deal on a whole bunch of nice (but very fine/thin) acrylic/wool/mohair blend yarn in pink, off-white, and a pale peacock blue. And some smaller knitting needles.

When I got home, I really wasn't satisfied with any of the cardigan or sweater patterns, but noticed a Debbie Bliss cashmere baby "beanie" hat pattern that I thought I would give a try.

I ended up altering it, because I didn't like the garter stitch it recommended (takes too long, and on 3mm needles it already takes forever!). And I think there was clearly a large error in the pattern instructions anyways (it said to keep knitting for 7 inches, which would have produced a super long rather odd-looking sleeping cap rather than a beanie!)

It did take foever, I would say at least 8, if not 10 hours of knitting.

I wasn't sure how long to knit for, so thus it has this "convertibleness" built in with a flip-up brim-mie type thing. I've never knit anything for a baby before, and I don't have too much experience with baby-sized heads, and the pattern was weird.

So I hope it fits! :)

Baby Laundry

I made this card for a group gift at a baby shower to be held today.

The letters were cut free hand, and the bottoms are taped down so that things don't get all wild and crazy in the envelope. I made a removeable blue paper lining so that people could take it out when signing as the mini clothespins were a bit bulky to be signing over.

Baby Booties

To begin this card, I first drew out a baby bootie on a piece of cardstock and cut it out. I also cut out two bootie outlines, and then embossed them using the template. The bows were stitched on with thread. The interior of the card is lined with the same blue paper, and is held together by the ribbon at the top threaded through two punched holes. The blue beads add a nice accent touch.

This card I made for my sister. The butterfly outline was made with a rubber stamp and then was coloured in with pencil crayons. The lighter blue cardstock was ripped and placed upon a "galaxy" spotted navy cardstock.

Baby Pink, Baby Blue

This weekend I suddenly realized that oh gosh, all these weddings are coming up on my calendar! So, I spend yesterday afternoon crafting a few wedding cards up. I made a similar style before for a couple of friends who got married last year, and I love the way they turn out. Unfortunately the scans do not do them justice!

The dresses are embossed with a Fiskars embossing thingy that my roommate has. Sometimes I make my own template and emboss them that way, but yesterday I took the easy route.

My friend Leanne from Bible college is getting married in May on Vancouver Island. Unfortunately I cannot make it to either her shower or her wedding, but this card is what I am sending in lieu of my attendance at the shower. I think their wedding colours are baby pink and baby blue, so thus the card colours. The interior is lined in baby blue.

The colours for this card were chosen from cardstock after I decided to use the clear orangey-yellow sticker. I wrote my sister's name with marker, and adhered the sticker overtop of the white cardstock. Silver-coloured brads and postage-stamp edged scissor cuts make a decorative accent.

This is a card I made for my cousin for her birthday. The big "D" is made with red acid-free cardstock paper, a D-shaped rubber stamp, and a large clear sticker. It is sewn onto the white cardstock. The other letters are clear with a printed-on red letter, and are adhered to the white cardstock as well. The card has a speckled white sheet inside to write on, and is fastened together by three strands of black sewing thread, knotted through small punched holes.

About a month ago I bought this "learn-your-alphabet-and-numbers" thingy from the dollar store. It takes about 8 tiles to make a bracelet, so I got four bracelets out of the deal.

Wallace and Grommet

I got a grommeting tool and grommets for Christmas from my Mom, so this is one of my first projects. I'm not sure where I can get grommets around here, so I'm being conservative.

The flower was made with a punch I got at a dollar store, it was one in a pack of two for a dollar. The other one was a little feet punch, I don't use it very often.

The white paper edging was done with "ripped paper" edge scissors. I'm not a big fan of the scallopy-edge scissors, but this one is neat.

A seashell card I made with beads from a dollar store. The beads are sewn on with regular sewing thread, then the paper layers are glued together with that acid free glue that is blue when wet, clear when dry.

I like it when people send me paperclips in their mail at work, because then I get new different paper clips. I think it would be cool, if you were a trombonist making a CD, to name your CD "paperclip" because in French, "paperclip" is "trombone."

Busy Bee

A little bumble bee in the centre of a card. Made with a brass embossing stencil, plain mustard-coloured cardstock, textured brown cardstock, on a white cardstock background.

This is a dry-embossed bear card I made using a brass stencil bought from a dollar store. The stencil design actually has a blossom on the side of it, but I chose to omit it for this card. I love the way the colours look together.

Office Crafts 101

What do you do when you're crafty and work in an office? Make office crafts, of course! This is a pen and pencil holder I created using a bottle I found in the office kitchenette area. I made flower-shaped stickers out of a bumper sticker that our camp had made a couple of summers back. The design turned out a little abstract on the flowers, you can't tell that it was once an advertisement. I like the bottle a lot, it spruces up my desk quite nicely. :)

These are some "postage stamp" cards I made at camp as encouragment notes for various people. The animals are pre-cut foamie shapes, the rest of the card is made with construction paper. The postage stamp edges were made with specialty-edge scissors bought from Costco in a pack of 18 scissors.

This is the card that I made my Dad from the cats. He has this "Serta" mattress promotional sheep stuffed animal with a "44" on it, so this is Serta with a blanket thrown over him and a "55" for 55 years. I scanned this on a white background, the card is actually cut out around the black edge.

This is the card I made my Dad for his birthday. I tried out some new mulberry paper, but I didn't like it. It looks cheap. The swirls on the sheep I did by dry embossing. That is when you use a stencil and an embossing tool (a pen-like instrument with a metal ball at the end) and press into the cardstock.

Lavender Pansies

This is a card I made my Mom for Mother's Day this year. It is made of cardstock except for the green mulberry paper that is directly behind the pansies. The pansies I made in three layers and accented with purple and yellow chalks. The pansies and mulberry paper are glued together with white glue, the rest of it is held together with acid-free scrapbooking tape.
